Hosting Glossary - A
Archie
A system that helps you find files located anywhere on the Internet.
After Archie locates the file, you can use FTP to get it. Archie
is both a
program and a system of server computers that contain indexes of
files.
Argument
Words or numbers you enter as part of an HTML tag to expand or modify
how that tag operates.
Asynchronous
Communication
Communication that occurs at different times, between two or more
individuals, in contrast to Synchronous communication. For e.g.
e-mails,some conferencing systems, bulletin boards.
ATM
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a networking technology that
provides a guaranteed quality of service. Standard Internet connections
are based
on Frame Relay technology. The throughput of Frame Relay links can
be
drastically reduced under certain circumstances, just as a garden
hose
becomes less effective when stepped on or kinked. However, ATM links
are like metal pipes-they always provide the same amount of throughput,
regardless of the pressure exerted on them. ValueWeb"s hosting
facility
has direct ATM connections to the major Internet hubs on both the
East and
West coasts (MAE-East, and MAE-West).
Authentication
The process of identifying an individual, usually based on a username
and password.
Authoring
Software
Computer programs that aid in creating HTML documents by inserting
the
code for tags. Trellix Web and MS FrontPage are examples of authoring
software.
ADN
(Advanced Digital Network) -- Usually refers to a 56Kbps leased-line.
ADSL
(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) -- A method for moving data
over phone lines. An ADSL circuit is much faster than a phone connection,
and the wires coming into the subscriber’s premises are the
same (copper) wires used for phone service. An ADSL circuit must
be configured to connect two specific locations, similar to a leased
line.
ADSL
is often discussed as an alternative to ISDN, allowing higher speeds
in cases where the connection is always to the same place.
