Certificate
Authority
An issuer of Security Certificates used in SSL connections.
CGI
(Common Gateway Interface) A CGI is a program that tanslates data
from a web server and then displays that data on a web page or in
an email. Many people use CGI's for guestbooks and email forms.
Some hosts have pre-made CGI scripts that are ready to use and plug
into a web site.
cgi-bin
The most common name of a directory on a web server in which CGI
programs are stored. The “bin” part of “cgi-bin”
is a shorthand version of “binary”, because once upon
a time, most programs were refered to as “binaries”.
In real life, most programs found in cgi-bin directories are text
files -- scripts that are executed by binaries located elsewhere
on the same machine.
Client
A software program that is used to contact and obtain data from
a Server software program on another computer, often across a great
distance. Each Client program is designed to work with one or more
specific kinds of Server programs, and each Server requires a specific
kind of Client . A Web Browser is a specific kind of Client.
Co-location
Basically this is just owning a server but having it a another location.
This is great for people who want to own their own server, but do
not want the hassle of maintaining that server in their environment.
Cookie
If you have ever been to a web site like ivillage.com, iwon.com,
or amazon.com, you may notice your name on the page in a message
like "Welcome Back John!" This is because your browser
stored a tiny cookie file that enabled their server to identify
you from the first time that you registered with them. This saves
regular visitors or customers of your site time from having to log
in and log out every time they visit your site.
Cache
Pronounced cash, a special high-speed storage mechanism. It can
be either a reserved section of main memory or an independent high-speed
storage device.
Certificates: Secure
or Digital
Issued by a Certificate Authority (such as Equifax, Thawte or Verisign)
, a Secure Certificate (also known as a Digital Certificate) is
proof that a Web site is linked to a legitimate business, with a
physical address and phone number. It is the job of the Certificate
Authority to verify the identity of merchants and issue each a digital
or authentication certificate.
Cisco
One of the leading manufacturers of network equipment. Cisco"s
primary business is in Internet working products, such as routers,
bridges, and switches.
Click-through Rate
In web advertising, the click through rate is the number of clicks
on an advertisement (such as a banner ad) is expressed as a percentage
of the number of times that the page where the ad appears was downloaded.
Thus, the click through rate would be 10% if one in ten people who
viewed the advertisement clicked on it, and landed on the advertisers"
site.
Client/Server
Architecture
A network architecture in which each computer or process on the
network is either a client or a server. Servers are powerful computers
dedicated to managing disk drives (file servers), printers (print
servers), or network traffic (network servers). Clients are PCs
or workstations on which users run applications. Clients rely on
servers for resources, such as files, devices, and even processing
power.
COM
When these letters appear in lowercase type at the end of an address,
they indicate that the host computer is run by a company rather
than a university or government agency. It also means that the host
computer is most likely located in the United States.
Connectivity
A computer buzzword that refers to a program or device"s ability
to link with other programs and devices.
Control Panel
The Control Panel is an on-line interface, that allows users to
change and update their Web sites.
Cold
Fusion
A software package by Allaire used by programmers to create an interface
that allows users to query databases while on a Web site.
